An aussie in Taiwan

Day 3

Day 3 in Toucheng Farm, Taiwan, Josh Treisman speaking.

The weather is sweltering, but the backdrop and farm is still as beautiful as ever. The jungle-like scenery is complemented by streams and valleys that make one feel as if they are in the wild jungles of Taiwan, but at the same time never too far from a friendly face or some home-cooked Taiwanese food.

Today I started bright and early, picking a considerable amount of 小黃瓜 (cucumber) and interacting with the friendly local workers, interns and staff that are a constant presence at the farm. The cucumbers we picked are going to be mainly given to a variety of nursery homes and schools in the local area, with a small portion being sold to order-only customers. It is very rewarding to know that the work done benefits the local community in a variety of ways, while also assisting the farm itself to produce food for its guests.

I then proceeded to assist in picking beans, making sure to avoid the ones that were destroyed by pesky caterpillars! We took a break to indulge in some traditional Taiwanese food prepared onsite, complete with some fries for those craving a western flavour. I finished the day again picking cucumbers as they grow incredibly fast and are picked twice a day, which is a fact I was completely unaware of until I came to Toucheng farm and experienced it myself!

That's all for today, stay tuned for my next adventure at Toucheng Farm :)
